Western Loudoun County artist Anita Baarns created the official painting for the International Gold Cup Races, which depicts horses jumping the giant log in the Steeplethon race.
Baarns, who paints from a studio on her Meadowview Farm, said that English artist Lionel Edwards provided the inspiration for this year’s painting.
“I wanted to do a big landscape like an Edwards painting, with all of Great Meadow in the background, and the action in the foreground,” she explained. The annual fall throng of 30,000-plus attendees provide a colorful splash of background while the jumping horses give drama to the painting.
Posters and prints of the painting are available for purchase from the Virginia Gold Cup Association office at 90 Main Street in Warrenton or call (540) 347-2612,
