Middleburg remain the autumn season’s only two-day • race meet. New this year to-Virginia is the $50,000 Paul Mellon Memorial hurdle stakes.
The $30,000 McCashin Memorial novice hurdle at Morven Park in Leesburg Oct. 9 kicks off the $1 million Sport of Kings international series.
The Oct. 16 International Gold Cup in The Plains is the fall’s richest timber event at $50,000. The Nov. 6 Virginia Hunt Cup at the Montpelier Races, worth $25,000, is one of just two four-mile races run during the fall season.
“Even with the summer’s drought, and now, with the hurricane season and sudden heavy .rains, the fall steeplechase season is still going full steam ahead,” said Charlie Colgan, executive vice-president of the National Steeplechase Association. “And, as usual, Virginia is leading the way, with the most races, the first meet, one of the last meets, the biggest timber stake. For lots of reasons Virginia steeplechasing is strong this year, as always.”
