David Cole spoke of his support for and need X of assistance from local farmers and landowners to achieve his production objectives. As his markets grow through marketing and sales efforts and through acquisitions like Walnut Acres, the need for product grows as well.

Sunnyside Farms presently has arrangements with local farmers—some involve the outright lease of suitable farmland, and others a contracted first right to specific farm products, and Cole said that they are in need of additional resources.

In the near term, Sunnyside Farms has requirements for organic poultry, beef, herbs, specialty birds and fruit including apples, peaches and cherries. Sunnyside will assist in the organic certification process and teaching of organic methods, and has special interest in large parcels of agricultural land on which no . prohibited products have been applied for at least three years.

This may indeed be an opportunity for Rappahannock farmers and others who have an interest in involvement in the organic food industry, or who are simply seeking an alternative that might enhance their farm’s viability.
