The horse had sustained a major suspensory apparatus rupture and lost fetlock joint stability. Kimzey watched as Dr. Ferraro struggled to attach a board splint to the horse’s foot and the difficult process of padding and bandaging the leg in acute flexion. Dr. Ferraro explained to Kimzey that while this splinting technique was effective, it was not easy to use and could not be applied on the track immediately after the injury, which was the ideal time to provide support to the leg.
One week later, Dr. Ferraro received the now famous Kimzey Leg Saver Splint in the mail. This device is currently used worldwide by countless veterinarians and has been instrumental in saving the lives of some of the most famous equine athletes.
