He was buried there following his death in 1836. Title to Montpelier changed hands six times after Madison’s widow Dolley sold it in 1844 until William duPont Sr. bought it in 1901. DuPont enlarged the mansion and added bams, stables, a blacksmith shop and train station.
His daughter Marion duPont Scott inherited the fabulous estate in 1934, adding a steeplechase course and initiating the Montpelier Races. Upon her death in 1984, the National Trust acquired the property.
Tbday, visitors can take a guided tour of the 2,700-acre estate, including the 55-room mansion and formal gardens.
