Then about 20 years ago, some commonwealth’s attorney, looking to make a name for himself right before his election, decided to crack down. He had the bookies arrested, and that was pretty much the end of betting at the steeplechases.
Since that time, unless you hit a jump race at a major pari-mutuel track, fans have to make do with betting among themselves.
Betting among the group that you came with is problematic at best. If you have a really good day, you’re not taking money from some New York bookie. You may be taking it out of the pockets of your next-door neighbor, and that can make it interesting on the ride home.
After years and years of wagering and observation, I’ve come to a conclusion that I’m willing to share with you. If you follow this, you should be able to fleece your friends good when you go to the races.
