Bulle Rock, believed to be the first thoroughbred imported from England, arrived in America in 1730. The rapidly expanding population and its passion for horse racing soon made an American stud book vital. The Civil War devastated most of the southern breeding farms and destroyed virtually all their records.
If a complete stud book were ever to be put together, it would have to be done while the people involved were still living.
Published in 1873 by Col. Sanders VD. Bruce, a Kentuckian, the stud book represented almost a lifetime spent researching the pedigrees of American thoroughbreds. Bruce closely followed the pattern of the English General Stud Book, producing six volumes uhtil 1896 when it was taken over by The Jockey Club.
