His public life spanned 53 years and included service as a delegate to the Continental Congree, a member of Virginia’s House of Delegates, a congressman, Thomas Jefferson’s Secretary of State, and, of course, the fourth president of the U.S.
His most far-reaching contribution to U.S. history was as primary author of the Constitution and one of the authors of the Federalist Papers. He also helped negotiate passage of the Bill of Rights.
