Of the National Steeplechase Association-sanctioned races held last year, prize money totalled more than $4,381,000. The richest, the Far Hills meeting in New Jersey, featured purses of $307,500, including the rich $150,000 Breeders’ Cup Grand National, grade I. The richest steeplechase ever held in America was the $750,000 Dueling Grounds ‘chase in Kentucky, run just once, in 1990. Bonus prizes make the sport even more lucrative. The $1 million top prize for the Sport of Kings novice series has never been won. A horse must capture four of five legs of the fall series to claim the $1 million. Closest to it was Lonesome Glory who in 1992 won one series event in the U.S., one in England, for a $75,000 award.
