Belmont’s manse first gained historic importance late during the War of 1812. A ferocious August, 1814 battle near Washington, D.C. forced President James Madison and a number of irreplaceable historic documents to flee downtown. The documents were housed in the Leesburg courthouse, while Pres. Madison sought refuge at Belmont.
Provided sanctuary by the Lees, Madison and his cabinet conducted the affairs of state from temporary headquarters in the quiet hills of northern Virginia.
