ne conditional expansion comes in response to the county’s threat “to sue the Updikes,” Mr. Forman said.
Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Updike operate Community Trash Disposal Inc., the company that provides and maintains Rappahannock’s dumpsters. Under the terms of their contract with the board, the Updikes are responsible for all solid waste deposited in those dumpsters.
To date, they have disposed of the waste at the landfill they run jointly with Clifton Clark. Closure will leave them with no dump site in the county.
The Updikes’ contract with the county would have expired a month before the landfill’s life expectancy. But at a special meeting last month, the supervisors voted to exercise their option for a year’s extension, and at the same time, affirmed their intention to hold the Updikes responsible for trash left in the dumpsters, whether or not the landfill remains open.
Mr. Forman reported that Ruth Updike telephoned him on Monday and said that she and her husband will not be able to fulfill their contract with the county if the dump on Mr. Clark’s property is shut down.
