The Children’s Hospital National Medical Center has played a direct role in saving the lives of, and sometimes comforting the deaths of, many children with serious or terminal illnesses from all across the nation. That’s why it has been chosen by the Virginia Federation of Republican Women as the primary beneficiapr of a fund-raiser called “A Day in Horse Country” this Saturday at Great Meadow near The Plains.
“Your country depends on its children and how well educated and taken care of they are . . . They were the first hospital in the U.S. to set up a care unit for abused children — one of the main targets of the Federation of Republican Women,” said Mary Timmerman of Warrenton, who undertook the organization of the huge event with Betsy Hostrop last September.
The hours of preparation and planning have resulted in a large scale event that will feature an assortment of horse-oriented activities and exhibitions, tailgate parties, music and celebrity appearances. “I really think we have everything,” said Mrs. Hostrop, also of Warrenton.
The event has drawn support from all comers of the community. “Everybody is donating their services,” said Mrs. Timmerman. “By the time this whole thing has finished we’ll have invested more than 5,000 hours.”
Many local groups will contribute to put on the huge event.
