nock representatives, as well as others familiar with Rappahannock County, agreed that this approach would be difficult for Rappahannock, although they suggested that an attempt be made by each county.
“We can help each other so much,” said Lorrain Robson of Meadowood.
She told the group that she was a member of several chambers of commerce and business councils and that, although none of them benefitted her personally, she knew that it would eventually be to her advantage.
“I have brochures from lots of area attractions and businesses,” she said. “When I get a request for information, I send my brochure, and I send those of other area people.”
“Maybe they’ll decide to go to Sandra’s this time (Sandra Cartwright-Brown of the Conyers House); maybe they’ll decide to go to the Swinging Bridge Pottery (in Madison), but maybe next time they’ll come to me. This is the way we all need to think.”
Members of the fledgling association discussed the four characteristics of an area that attract visitors: history, scenic beauty, recreation and shops. Pat McMahon had told them at the initial meeting that if two of these attributes were present tourism could be encouraged.
“Each of our counties has all four of these,” said Jim Thomasson.
