Classical or Scientific, both requiring 33 credits, and 18 students were awarded the General Academic diploma which requires 26.5 credits.
The valedictorian, Tara Welty of Washington, Va., reminisced about her 12 years at Wakefield, counselled younger students about their expectations of their senior year, and ended by saying that her years at Wakefield will become more valuable in the years to come — not less.
Also during the ceremony, a 1985 graduate, Paul Lackman of Middleburg, was presented with a Certificate of Admission to the United States Military Academy at West Point. Lackman will become a member of the Class of 1990.
In his closing remarks, Mr. Lynn recalled listening to the famous “Ask Not” speech delivered by John F. Kennedy and wondering what he could do. He wanted to establish a school but noted that there is often a great gap between the dream and the reality. He went on to say that this year he realized the dream had become a reality.
The ceremony concluded with the traditional ringing of the bell by Mr. Lynn. Throughout the school year, the bell is rung to open assemblies and bring meetings to order. At graduation, it closes the year and is always greeted •cheers by students.
