They swam out to the middle of the lake. On their way back, Martin shouted he couldn’t made it back to shore and went under, Sheriff Olinger said.

The friend got to the shore and ran for help.

The Sheriffs Department and State Police responded to the scene. Rescue personnel from the Warrenton, Culpeper, Remington and Lake of the Woods fire and rescue squads also helped in the search, the sheriff said.

Clarke singer wins

‘Star Search’

John Hudson, an up and coming singer from Clarke County, won the finals of the regional talent show contest sponsored by the TV show “Star Search.”

The 27-year-old Hudson, who released his first record two years ago, won $500 and a live audition this July with representatives from Star Search.

“This is really exciting,” Hudson told the newspaper in Martinsburg, where the competition was held. “I’ve been at this since I graduated in 1980 from Longwood College.”

Hudson sang a tune he wrote and arranged for the regional performance, entitled: “Relight the Flame.”

Arson charged

at Boyce

A Clarke County man has been arrested and charged with setting fire to his own home.

Larry Royston, age 47, was charged in connection with the fire which damaged his home near the community of Boyce, according to the records of the Clarke County Sheriffs Department. The fire damaged the northwest corner of the structure. It took firemen from two companies about two hours to extinguish the blaze.
