“If you want to attract hummingbirds, just plant Impatiens somewhere,” Ms. Walbridge recommends. Other flowers, planned and planted for a succession of blooms, will attract them throughout the summer and provide a balanced diet.
Once the tiny birds find them, hummingbird feeders will be visited regularly. But Ms. Walbridge cautions that feeders must be maintained and kept filled with clean, freshly prepared sugar syrup. (Mix one part sugar to two parts boiling water, and keep stored in the refrigerator. Do not feed honey or other sweeteners — they can cause a fatal disease.)
