Wheat producers will soon be receiving ballots to determine whether they would favor imposing mandatory limits on wheat production. The balloting is for a poll required by the Food Security Act of 1985.
Linda Henry, county executive director of the Warren and Rappahannock County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service, said that producers will be asked if they favor imposition of mandatory limits on production of wheat which will result in wheat prices that are not lower than 125 percent of the cost of production.
“Response by wheat producers is voluntaiy,” Ms. Henry said, “and the poll is non-binding upon the Secretary of Agriculture. The results of the poll won’t require the Secretary to take a particular action. It’s not a referendum, but it is a way for wheat producers to express their desires about a farm program.”
Wheat poll ballots will be mailed to each producer on June 25. Responses must be postmarked by July 7.
To be eligible to vote, farmers must have produced at least one crop of wheat during 1981 through 1985 on a wheat acreage base of at least 40 acres.
