Under different names, at various times of the year, and at an assortment of places, there has beeh a talent show in Rappahannock for the past decade.
In fact, say Peter Kreyling and Gene Lyman, who supervised technical and organizational aspects of the show during the mid-1970s, there were productions of local talent that occurred whenever musicians, dancers, and other acts could get together with an audience.
No one is absolutely certain, but the first documented production took place at the old Hillsdale drivein in 1975, at a time when the creative spirit of the county was fueled by the dozens of young people who called Rappahannock home for a time during that era. Mr. Lyman’s Hillsdale Tapes record performances of skilled acoustical guitar work and sweet harmonies, mostly by people who have since moved on.
One home-grown act was the singing of the Nokes family of Sperryville, a man and wife gospel team that shook the grounds and set the audience clapping in the warm summer night.
