A formal garden was the setting for the seventh annual commencement exercises of Wakefield School in Huntly on Sunday evening. A new tradition was established as seniors traded the traditional red cap and gown for white dresses for the girls and white trousers with navy blazers for the boys. Each of the 31 seniors graduated wore a red rose which was a gift from the school.
The faculty and seniors entered to the traditional Pomp and Circumstance led by flag bearers Ann Dunning of Boyce and Jeff Reid of Front Royal. The class represented the largest number to be graduated from Wakefield and all 31 students will attend colleges as diverse as Harvard University and Dalhousie College in Nova Scotia.
The invocation was delivered by Paul Gallagher of St. Mary's Church in Blacksburg. The salutatorian, T. J. Hegerich of Berryville, followed, remarking that the Class of 1986 above all demonstrated diversity.
The award for the all-around girl, named for the school’s late librarian Dr. Barbara Myatt, was presented to Lisa Larimer of Front Royal. The Peter Quinn award for all-around boy went to Sean Bennett of Boston, Va., who earlier in the year earned the distinction of being the only stu
