Miss Viguerie has a varied program planned for the summer. So far the children have learned about snakes and other reptiles, and now are watching tadpoles metamorphose into frogs in a container right in the classroom.

The children also have a small garden outside the school. “Last week they were asking about beans, so we have beans sprouting now (on a windowsill).”

Each day the group takes walks

in the woods, where Tuesday they looked at fungus on rotten logs and searched for snake and turtle eggs. They are also keeping a close eye on the plants and animals around a small pond near the school.

The pond was the site for an adventure last Friday. The class was catching tadpoles when someone spotted a large snake in the process of devouring a big bullfrog. Miss Viguerie saved the frog, and in the process was able to explain to the children about how the food chain works.
