Walter Kilby
Dr. Walter L. Kilby, 81, of Woodstock, died June 15 at the Life Care Center, New Market.
Dr. Kilby was born April 29, 1905, in Sperryville, son of the late Walter B. and Margaret Yowell Kilby.
He received his medical degree in 1933 from the University of Virginia Medical School, interned at Cincinnati General Hospital and spent two years at the University of Virginia as assistant resident and resident roentgenologist.
During his stay at the University of Virginia, he became a member of Phi Delta Kappa, Phi Chi medical fraternity, Alpha Omega Alpha, and Iota Sigma. He was elected to the Raven Society in 1932 and the same year was elected president of the medical school. He is listed in Who’s Who in America.
He practiced in Baltimore, Md., from 1936 to 1975 except for a period of time in the armed forces. He was associated with the Department of Radiology at the University of Maryland Hospital and in private practice. From 1940 to 1953, he was director and professor of radiology at the University of Maryland Medical School and Hospital.
Dr. Kilby spent 33 months overseas during World War II with the 142nd General Hospital sponsored by the University of Maryland. He was returned to the U.S. in April 1945, having been promoted to lieutenant colonel.
