Doing good is a response to what? To those determinisms of which education and contemplation make people aware? If so, is good predetermined by them? What if, as appears to be the case, some people do good in reaction against, rather than in compliance with, such determinants?
One fellow at a recent committee meeting had obviously thought about this question long and hard. He gave a quick and short answer to the question of what drives people to think through issues and to do good. “Fear or lust!” was his concise reply.
Somehow one hopes for more than that.
Whatever circles you run in, no matter how trivial, raise the “Why bother?” question. It will shock you how often you find people operating by reflex or habit, and not by responsiveness. Responsive people, on the other hand, will offer you any of several possible explanations.
