The forum for School Board candidates Tuesday night ranged over a wide variety of topics, from budgets to the arts, and even touched on Creationism.
First candidates answered questions they had already received. They had one minute each to answer. Then pairs of candidates from each district responded to questions submitted by voters in their districts. Finally each was allowed one and a half minutes for a summary statement.
On a question for all on what should be added to or taken out of the curriculum, Hampton District candidate Elizabeth Whetzel and Stonewall-Hawthom District candidate Tom Von Fange both suggested replacing “whole language” with phonics. Piedmont District candidate Dennis Wingfield suggested taking a look at classes few students choose to take and classes that duplicate others for possible elimination.
Wakefield District candidate Ellen Manson suggested more preparation in technology and a greater emphasis on vocational education on preparing students for careers in service occupations.
