accident, that each word has a meaning for the place it’s in, that it’s symbolic of something.”
The two students agreed that the program, which was a constant stream of writing and tough criticism, was very challenging. “It taught me how to edit my poetry better, and I also got an idea of how poetry is defined,” Marie said.
Both students felt sure of their favorite piece of writing. Marie’s was a poem called “Leaving Song.” "Wow, I finally wrote something I liked," she smiled. Jennifer’s favorite poem “Awakened By A-Storm” was an experiment with a new style and new techniques that involved short concise rhythms and word placement.
At the epd of the program there was a Writer’s Cafe where students read their work to each other. It took place in the college’s cafeteria, complete with tables seating four, covered in table clothes, candles and flowers. “The classic stuff, a restaurant setting,” Jennifer said, and went on to describe the skylight. “You could see the stars and everything.” The Writer’s Cafe was decorated with student art work and a mural of a city skyline.
Marie, was enthusiastic about the culminating activity. “Even though I’m usually shy, 1 loved it!” They both read their favorite poems to their fellow writers and enjoyed the response.
Both Marie and Jennifer enjoyed the program and recommend it to anyone who loves to write, and is willing to work hard.
Leaving Song

My want smells like nectarine,
drips like it, seeps through clothing
and skin, saturates me.
I will grab your long fingers,
devour your burnt brown eyes with my own.
We will taste our want.
Let’s take pieces of each other,
wrap them in paper, place them in the freezer.
