No candidate for the Virginia House of Delegates has, in recent memory, provided the voters of this county and district with such an attractive choice as Sue Scheer. An independent and experienced person,. Sue Scheer provides us with the chance to vote for a candidate committed to the needs and interests of our district.
As former public school teachers we are particularly impressed with Sue Scheer’s commitment to the support and improvement of our public schools. Unlike her opponent, Jay Katzen, who sponsored a bill {HB 2535} to divert scarce public funds to support private charter schools, Sue Scheer opposes such diversion of taxpayers’ money. In addition, Katzen supported Gov. Allen’s failed effort to cut $40 million from public schools, $52 million from colleges and universities, and $14.5 million from Agricultural Extension. Scheer opposed the governor’s cuts.
We are incensed that Gov. Allen refused, with Katzen’s support, to accent millions of federal funds for the support of public education programs to increase student achievement, increase adult literacy, and involve parents in creating drug-free schools, all goals which Scheer strongly supports.
Rappahannock County has serious difficulties finding sufficient revenue to support our public schools. Yet in vote after vote our present delegate, Jay Katzen, has voted to deprive our county of badly needed state funds to educate our children. It is high time we voted him out of office and replaced him with a delegate who is pledged to give our children the improved education they deserve: Sue Scheer.
