Several people spoke in favor of Ms. Maier and her course. Brenda Van Ness, Joyce and Richard Abell and Lilo Foster said they had benefited from Ms. Maier’s instruction on the use of native plants and having such an herbal center would be good for Rappahannock.
Ms. Maier said the “whole intention of the course is to teach people to go back to their communities and be more self sufficient.” She said there is a wealth of native plants, and some imported plants that people can use for food or for healing. “I want to help people connect to why we need to preserve the environment," she said.
Mr. Jenkins said he went up Route 624 earlier in the week and there was no gravel on the road they were intending to use. “Is she intending to build a road for this?” he asked. “What if it floods and the road is washed out?”
Ms. Maier said if that happened she and the people taking the class would walk in.
