A FEW FACTS ABOUT RADAR ENFORCEMENT Due to the fact that the Virginia State Police don’t work stationary radar in a reduced speed zone, the Rappahannock. Sheriff’s Office began to work radar after numerous complaints of speeding from the citizens. The office policy is to work radar in reduced speed zones whenever time permits. This includes the Town of Washington, the villages of Flint Hill, Sperryville, Woodville, Chester Gap and the school zones. There is to be no stationary enforcement of radar on Rt. 211, but during routine patrol if there is a violation of the speeding laws at a rate of 70 miles per hour or more the deputy is authorized to issue a citation if he so desires. The enforcement of speeding by radar is also allowed on secondary roads that are not normally enforced by the State Police, like Rt. 642, Rt. 628, Rt. 611 and Rt. 622 which was just requested in the last couple of weeks for more enforcement. I do not believe that the citizens of these areas and the children of our county deserve any less protection than they are already receiving. Also keep in mind that these violations bring on the detection of other violations of the law like DUI and DWI, habitual offender, unsafe vehicles and drug violations. Unlike the jail, radar enforcement is not used as a tool for generating income for the county, but I do believe that if a citation is written by a deputy that the fines should go the the county 'and not to the state. Operation of the Sheriff’s Office and the jail must be operated as a business, receiving a dollar worth of goods for a dollar spent.
