suggested more attention to electrical controls at the high school and the use of telephones for long distance calls.
Others predicted a particularly difficult time with next year’s budget because the county will be getting less state aid. Mr. Lee, Mr. Makela, Mr. Tole said it would be difficult to maintain the programs the schools now have. Mr. Nichols seconded the suggestion for airconditioning the auditorium.
On a question of how to prepare teachers to handle students with special needs such as the gifted and talented and special education students, the candidates gave varied answers. Mr. Nichols suggested classes for teachers. Mrs. Whetzel suggested having them visit special education classrooms to work as aides with the teachers there. Mr. Lee suggested having special education teachers come to regular classrooms to work with special education students there Mr. Snead suggested in-service training, and Mr. Wood suggested sending the teachers to seminars. Mr. Tole said this is the most difficult part of education and added, “1 believe all children are special.”
Several others said this was an unrealistic goal. Mrs. Manson said, “The expectation that all teachers can teach all children is not realistic.” Mr. Makela agreed with that assessment.
Mr. Von Fange agreed saying there are teachers specially selected for their ability to work with such children. Mr. Wingfield said all teachers can learn to recognize the needs of special education children, but he agreed not all teachers can teach special education children.
All candidates showed support for education in the arts, but some suggested in this area the schools may have to rely on volunteers from the community.
