We don’t hear about his policy of personally looking into anything that is broken and trying to fix it before a repairman is called. That is why one Christmas morning, when it was five degrees, the Sheriff was under the jail un-freezing an oil line to keep the furnace running. j
Thanks to Sheriff Woodward, the deputies have repeater radios in all of the cars. This allows the deputy to get out of the car with a portable radio and to stay in direct communications with the dispatcher and other vehicles without having to return to the car.

The Rappahannock County Sheriffs Office has a crime solving rate that is twice the average of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Sheriff Woodward has achieved this standard through direct leadership and training. In order to hold the line on costs, and yet provide his deputies with the tools today’s police need, Sheriff Woodward has quietly and tirelessly worked in the background to develop a Sheriffs Department of which any county in Virginia would be proud.

To The Editor:
As a resident of Rappahannock County, and a mother of three sons, I believe my children have the right to a safe ride to school on a public school bus.
A man, not a parent or legal guardian, was allowed on my children’s school bus, by a substitute driver, and he proceeded to threaten the children on the bus.
That upset me, but what was even more discouraging was what happened after I called the Sheriff’s Office. A deputy responded to take my statement, but Sheriff J.H. Woodward, would not allow them to take my complaint saying it was a school problem and not my concern.
I talked to the principals of both the elementary and high schools and they told me to call. I made a call to
