He believes that Mount Vernon Cidery will be the first business in Virginia to produce hard cider on a large scale. He hopes to produce about 2,000 cases a month; a case is comprised of 24 12-oz. bottles. The hard cider is a refreshing carbonated apple cider with an alcohol content of five percent.
Already some wineries are producing a hard cider, such as Gallo, familiar to most people, and a Woodchuck Draft Cider produced by Joseph Cemiglia Winery in Vermont, which Mr. Miller says is the biggest producer right now. Molson, a beer company, is importing a couple of French ciders, said Mr. Miller.
