I can honestly say that I miss the job 1 left in 1993, and as many of your know, it was not by my choice. I truly enjoyed serving the citizens of Rappahannock. I took a great deal of pride and always did my very best to help anyone who needed assistance.
My nine years in the service of the Sheriff's office did give me an opportunity to observe the manner in which the office was being run. I believe that this is the right time to share some of these observations with the Rappahannock voting public:
• Delegating authority — non existent
• Supervision — sporadic
• Inequity — rampant
• Leadership — inconsistent
• Consideration of others — minimal
Response to citizens’ calls — only by his choice
There is no need to belabor the above points. Anyone even slightly familiar with the current operation of the Sheriff s Office will agree.
I therefore am proud to publicly state that I support the candidacy of Gary Settle for the office of Sheriff of Rappahannock County. He is my choice to be top law enforcement officer in this county. He is a native of the county and shares many of the values and opinions of its citizens.
Gary Settle has the makings of a great leader and has the qualities needed for this position in today’s environment. He recognizes the problems and issues that face Rappahannock and is well equipped to correct them to the best of his ability.
1 hope that the voters of Rappahannock County will understand that as the county grows, thereby increasing the potential for undesirable outside influences, so must the Sheriff’s Office grow both in considerable capability and education.
