To the Editor:
It seems to us that last week’s editorial entitled “Gary Settle” was unfair; when two good men are running for office, it is not the business of a newspaper to be partisan. A newspaper is a powerful tool for forming opinion and therefore carries a great responsibility.
Over the past few weeks we have seen quite a few opinions expressed. We can understand people voting out of loyalty because of friendship and family ties; at least that is honest.
But beware of the firebrands who try to sway public opinion because of personal grudges against the sheriffs department. In the cases we know of, the sheriff was correct in taking the action he did, and he did so after every other means of resolving the difficulty failed. In any position of authority enemies will be made and some of them can be very vocal.
Deciding who to vote for in this election isn’t easy. But after all has been said, do we vote one good man out of office for another? What happens in the next election when another good man decides to run? It won’t take long for good people to decide that it isn’t worthwhile to try to be elected. And that leads to corruption.
Sheriff Woodward has proved that he can do the job. Doesn’t the public have a moral obligation to reelect him? We think so.
