According to Market Watch magazine, “Ciders are competing for taps in a growing number of bars, providing an alternative for patrons seeking a change from beer.” Mr. Miller said that hard cider was very popular in the U.S. before prohibition, and that “The Mount Vernon Cidery is proud to contribute to the resurrection of a traditional American farm staple.”

“Fred’s cider” is named after Fred, one of Mr. Miller’s two affable and energetic Brittany spaniels. Fred’s cute face is on the label which touts the cider as being “pressed from a carefully selected blend of fresh Virginia apples. The varieties are chosen to create a balance of natural sweetness, astringency and aroma. The sweet cider is fermented in small batches with great care to preserve the delicate bouquet of the fruit.” Fred is also the model for T-shirts and hats to promote the business.

Most of the apples for the cider are purchased from the Sharps’ orchard, but some are from the Mount Vernon orchards which are off U.S. 211 in Sperry ville.
