Professor Peter Ochs’ undergraduate ethics class at the University of Virginia hosted a discussion last Thursday evening entitled “Religious Politics and Public Education: A Debate in Contemporary Education.”
The event was designed to evoke contention and discussion regarding the advisability and constitutionality of reinstituting religious education in public schools, and to explore the role that religion in public schools might play in influencing ethics and morality.
The discussion panel was composed of notable Virginians in religion, education and politics, including Lawrence Adams, UVA Program Director of the Center for University Programs; former Virginia state delegate and attorney J. Samuel Glasscock; Professor Ochs of UVA’s Religious Studies Department; Drew Trotter, Director of the Center for Christian study in Charlottesville; Rabbi Jacqueline Satlow of UVA and a former lobbyist for the separation of church and state; and Jon Heddleston of Sperryville, RCHS English teacher, lay pastor, and author of “Character Virtues, A Curriculum for Rappahannock County School System.”
