• May 8, 1969 — “Annual Meeting Wins The Cup With Driving Stretch Run” took the reader right to the Broadview action in that Fauquier Democrat headline. “A recordbreaking crowd watched John A. Warner’s Annual Meeting capture the famed Virginia Gold Cup here on May 3,” read the lead. More than 15,000 pushed into the Warrenton course to watch the 44th running of the timber classic won by the locally based Undersecretary of the Navy.

They were “thrilled as the sleek chestnut, ridden confidently by Willie Moore, moved to overtake .... pacesetting Gale Force X going to the 21st of 22 timber fences on the four-mile course.”
