People rode or traveled in horse-drawn carriages to get around. Nearly everything was hauled, carried or delivered on horse-drawn wagons. They even pulled the first trolleys.
The versatile horse played a vital role in farming and was widely used in early manufacturing. They plowed fields, turned mills and pulled canal boats. A whole segment of the early American economy revolved around the horse — livery stables, blacksmiths, farriers, veterinarians, harness makers, wagon and coach makers, coachmen, plow manufacturers and grooms.
Horses were everywhere. They carried the U.S. mail and played a pivotal role in every battle fought on Virginia soil. The horse has been the crucial link and party to most of the important happenings in Virginia history.
