When Virginia Gold Cup chairman Arthur W. Arundel in 1992 raised from three to five the number of times an owner must win the timber classic to “retire” the coveted gold trophy (six Cup trophies had previously been retired) he must have thought the huge trophy safe. Few horses ever make five runnings of such a top-level race, much less win it that many times.
Obviously, Arundel had not met Saluter.
When Ann Stem’s Virginia-bred jumping specialist made his patent late move in last May’s feature, the crowd of nearly 50,000 steeplechase fans went wild. So must have the price of gold bullion as it became clear that the ornate trophy was going home to Richmond with Mrs.
