The history of the thoroughbred in North America officially began with the importation to Virginia in 1730 the stallion Bulle Rock, a son of the Darley Arabian out a daughter of the Byerley Turk. Diomed, first winner of the Epsom Derby, in 1780, was imported to Virginia in 1799 at the age of 22. Diomed sired Sir Archy, who sired Timoleon, who sired the great four-miler Boston, who sired the even-greater Lexington.
