20; Junior Miss ages 8-13, and Little Miss, age 3-7 for this year’s carnival which will run from June 23 through June 26. The winner will be determined by who sells the most tickets for the drawing on June 26 for the first prize of $1,000, second prize $500; third and fourth prizes of $50 each; and fifth and sixth prizes of $25 each! You do not have to be present to win. The ladies will ride in the parade Thursday evening and the winner will be crowned Friday night. Lisa Jones and I attended the three day “Truancy and Safe Schools Second Annual Conference” in Norfolk this past week. We networked with several school systems from across the state and with the Department of Education to discuss proceeded other localities are utilizing to combat truancy and to ensure safe schools. The sessions were very enlightening. Due to the information we received, I encourage each of you to speak with your Division Superintendent and your School Board representative on the safety techniques currently in place at our county schools.
Challenge them to be innovative in their strategies. We need to support the actions which are in place or which may be required. Our children are our future. Their safety should be our number one priority. Folks, if you think the tragedy at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo, can’t happen here, think again.
