sold as a yearling to Maryland, and raced, with little success, over hurdles before being acquired by Maryland trainerrider Jack Fisher, a timber specialist himself. Saluter was then sold to Richmond-based owner Ann Stem.
After winning three timber races as a 4-year-old in 1993, including the Virginia Hunt Cup at Montpelier, Saluter placed second in the competitive My Lady’s Manor in April, 1994; three weeks later he captured his first Virginia Gold Cup, and the rest, as they say, is history.
Saluter has never lost at four miles. He won the Cup again in 1995, 1996, 1997 and 1998 — with the last triumph retiring the fabulous Gold Cup and etching his name indelibly on Virginia history.
