Made from gold nuggets mined in the 1849 California Gold Rush, the ‘new1 trophy is actually on old one, discovered by an American jeweler in a London pawn shop shortly after World War II. It was purchased by the Virginia Gold Cup Association from the Park Bemet Gallery — now known as Sotheby’s — in New York City.
Recently the trophy was purchased from the D.L. Ferguson estate trustees to replace the trophy retired by Saluter. Ferguson’s Leeds Don had previously retired the nugget trophy when winning the Cup three straight years for his Hume-based owner-breeder from 1965-’67.
The new-old trophy is 18-carat gold, on a walnut base with three 14carat gold miniature replicas completing the set.
