Virginians are fond of saying that if you poke a pin in a map of the Old Dominion, you’re likely to prod loose some steeplechase tidbit or other tuft of horse sports history.
The Virginia Gold Cup is a case in point. Four different race courses have hosted the timber classic in the race’s 76year history. Fifty-eight different horses have won the fourmile test, many of them bom, owned or trained in the Commonwealth. A random pinprick easily dislodges a Gold Cup moment.
