U.S. entered what became World War II two years later.
• April 28, 1949 — “Never Worry Wins Second Gold Cup In Thrilling Finish” pretty well capsulized the April 23 Virginia classic at Broadview in downtown Warrenton. The 15-year-old chestnut mare was reported to be quiet as a lamb in the winner’s enclosure as owner Thomas Stokes and rider Larry Montague celebrated their victory in front of 11,000 steeplechasing fans.
The mare “came with a fine flourish to win” under the guidance of Montague, who counted the Gold Cup as his very first ride over timber. Ten horses started the race; only four finished. Russell Arundel acted as racing secretary that year, his second time.
In other front-page news in the county weekly, the LeBaron Angus cattle sale brought $48,480 in revenues, and a popular new program distributing Spore Dust for Japanese Beetle control was instituted by the county agricultural agency.
