• Congratulations to senior Travis Williams who has been accepted at the University of the South in Swanee, Tenn.
• Mrs. Shafran’s Preschool and pre-kindergarten students have been involved in some exciting scientific studies in the last couple weeks. The subject of “metamorphosis” is being explored in a variety of ways. For example, they are incubating chicken eggs and anxiously awaiting the big day and observing the transformation of Peeper Frog tadpoles and Bullfrog tadpoles. They are also growing many different plants from seed: giant sunflower, orange, lemon and orange cosmos.
• Results of the National Latin Exam are in and WCDS students have fared exceptionally well. Three students received the distinction of Gold Summa Cum Laude, six received Silver Maxima Cuni Laude, four received Magna Cum Laude, three received Cum Laude, two received ah outstanding special certificate and ribbon, and three received special certificates. -
• Students in Mrs. Wingfield’s first grade class are well into their third and last reader as part of the phonics-based Open Court Reading system. Rain, hail, snow and even the occasional tornado, are all part of our world and first graders are busy investigating weather and all its components as part of their science program.
• The ERB’s are here! All this week students have been taking comprehensive tests prepared by the Educational Records Bureau. These are standardized tests which measure the student’s verbal and quantitative abilities. Specifically, vocabulary, reading comprehension, writing mechanics, writing process and mathematics.
• Our senior international students, under the practiced hand of Miss Stewart are learning symbolic logic to build arguments in composition as part of their “English as a Second Language” course. In Miss Super’s ESL class, her international students, from countries as diverse as Brazil, Indonesia, Mexico and Korea are learning about many of the states that make up our country.
