sor of today’s Virginia Gold Cup, was an important local event, held at Major Barry’s Clifton farm on Watery Mountain not far from Old Tavern, site of the modem Gold Cup. “Rider and Driver” magazine, a sporting index that all country dwellers enjoyed, reported that the thoroughbred Booten toted 15 extra pounds assigned to blood horses in his feature race victory with Mr. Maddux.
“No better hunt steeplechase is run anywhere in the land than this proved to be,” the report noted. “It was a contest of brains and finish riding such as stirs the blood of anyone who looks beneath the surface of things. A long race across country tests the coolness, keen judgement and spirit of the rider.”
