Racing of homing pigeons is a fascinating and educational sport and hobby in which, like horse racing, the entire family can take part. It presents the same challenges, but at a fraction of the expense for upkeep and care. It further creates an interest in subjects such as genetics, nutrition, physiology, psychology, weather, mathematics and carpentry.
The history of carrier pigeons goes back more than 5,000 years. Pigeons of that day had a range of about 40 miles per day. By 1819, the homing pigeon was developed sufficiently to fly 200 miles per day.
News of stock exchange quotations were sent by pigeon regularly across the English Channel along with other news from the continent. They played a vital role during both World Wars in radio silences. American homer G.I. Joe is credited for saving more than 1,000 British soldiers in WWII, and was awarded the Dickin Medal for bravery.
