The Rappahannock County Lion’s Club has completed this year’s program of sight and hearing screening. The chairman for these services, Lion Bob Anderson, reported the accomplishment of “a record year”.
The Lion Eye and Ear Van served the Rappahannock High School and the Elementary School, Wakefield Country Day School, Hearthstone School, The Child Care and Learning Center and the Senior Citizen Center.
A team of 16 Lions and two volunteers contributed a total of 204 hours over a six day period to complete 1014 screenings, (both sight and hearing tests), for 995 students and 19 senior citizens, 161 of the eye tests resulted in follow-up referrals though school contacts to parents, identifying 75 as having abnormal vision. Hearing was found to be abnormal in 33 tests requiring 19 follow-up referrals.
Lion Anderson expressed his appreciation to all the volunteers who worked in the Sight and Hearing Van and gave special thanks to Lion Barbara Plummer of the Marshall Lions Club who scheduled the busy van around our snow days at the schools.
The annual screenings of the vision and hearing of our young citizens is given the highest priority by the Lions.
