Not only for the children but also for the young at heart, who could resist owning their very own Saluter?
Not the living horse but a darned close approximation, according to manufacturer E&E Sportswear, Inc. in Richmond.
The first-ever Saluter “beanie horse'’ was offered for sale at the 1998 Great Meadow races; according to Virginia Gold Cup Association business manager Terry Jenkins, the 500 limited edition toys sold out before 11:30 a.m.
“They went on sale from the Gold Cup office [at 90 Main Street in Warren ton] a few days before the races,” Jenkins said. “And they were all sold out before the races even began on Saturday.”
