The Virginia Gold Cup itself didn’t herald the last turn of centuries. The sport of steeplechasing, however,was firmly established in Fauquier 100 years ago. Headlines from Warrenton’s New Index screamed with racing news in 1899, an eerie parity to the Fauquier Times-Democrat of 1999.
Herewith is a study of a century of Fauquier steeplechasing, at 10-year intervals. The Virginia Gold Cup’s past — from 1989, 1979, 1969, 1959, 1949, 1939 and 1929 are included, along with race reports from other Warrentonarea steeplechases 1919, 1909 and 1899 from before the first Gold Cup race in 1922.
For interest, also included is a wrap-up of other news ripped from the front page of the county’s weekly newspaper, a peek at what was weighing on the Warrentonian mind all those years ago.
