• Jiva Jr. — Another Virginia-bred, locally owned, trained and regularly ridden Jiva Jr. comes from the stable of Culpeper County horseman Larry Levy. The gelded son of Jiva Jim most recently won the open timber race at the March 27 Orange County Hunt Point-to-Point in his only 1999 start.
• Proud Dawg — In the world of the thoroughbred, horses are not considered halfsiblings unless they share the same mother. If two horses have the same sire they are not properly called half-brothers. Too bad for Proud Dawg: like Saluter, he is sired by late Maryland stallion Salutely.
The Lisa Parker-trainee is making waves of his own, however, and could be the type to have other sons of Salutely compared to him rather than his famous relative. Proud Dawg won the 1999 My Lady’s Manor feature in a driving finish. He broke his maiden over the 3 1/4-mile maiden timber course at Great Meadow in 1997, so the gelding is quite comfortable over the big post and rail jumps in The Plains.
